Aerating in Salem, Keizer & Turner
The red Jory clay in the Salem Hills and the heavier valley-floor soils compact under foot traffic, mowers and winter rain. Compacted soil sheds water, starves roots of air and leaves turf thin and weak. Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs out of the lawn, opening channels for air, water and nutrients.
We aerate in spring or early fall when the grass is actively growing and can fill the holes quickly. The plugs break down on the surface within a couple of weeks. Aeration right before overseeding gives new seed excellent soil contact.
What's included
- Core aeration across the full lawn
- Sprinkler heads marked and avoided
- Extra passes on high-traffic areas
- Plugs left to return nutrients to the soil
- Pairs well with overseeding
When to schedule it
In the Mid-Willamette Valley we typically schedule this in March, April, May, September, October.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I aerate my lawn?
Once a year is right for most Valley lawns on clay soil. Lightly used lawns on better soil can go every other year.
Should I aerate in spring or fall?
Either. Fall is often best because it lines up with overseeding season and the return of rain.
